City of Prairie Village
Shawnee, Osage, & Kansa Indians formerly owned the land now developed into the City of Prairie Village. After the successful development of the Country Club Plaza area in Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Nichols envisioned the transformation of this area just West of the Plaza into a well-planned community of beautiful homes & neighborhood shopping centers.
Construction in Prairie Village started in 1941 & by 1949 Mr. Nichols's dream became a reality when the City was named the 'Best Planned Community in America' by the National Association of Home Builders.
Of important note, Prairie Village is also a city of artists, with more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of American communities. This concentrated artistic talent has significantly factored into shaping the character of Prairie Village.
